ROCK will fill the missing link Heerlen - Aachen

September 2011
After an intensive period of lobbying in The Hague and negotiations with the Ministry of Transport in North Rhine-Westphalia the project moved closer to its aim. (Read the German press release of the Ministerial-level meeting in September 2011)
RoCK will finance a pilot phase: Starting in 2013 for one year there will be a hourly IC service between Eindhoven and Aachen. Read the article 'Vaart achter intercity Eindhoven-Aken' (16.09.2011)

Within the investment 'IC connection Eindhoven-Aachen', an existing rail connection between two important knowledge regions 'Brainport' Eindhoven and Aachen will be upgraded into a high-quality rail connection.
Currently, Eindhoven and Aachen are poorly connected by public transport. Although rail service is provided, there is no quality IC connection. The geographical extent of the Dutch railway concession network stops in Heerlen, just before the German border. Thus, there is no adequate IC connection to fill the gap of 20 km to the German and European High Speed Train network (HST). Furthermore, there are different operating systems on both sides of the border. Today Dutch IC trains using electrical motor units cannot run on the German voltage network.
The investment's existing infrastructure will be improved by smart solutions.
To ensure sustainable and effective operation of IC trains to the HST station in Aachen, various technical adjustments have to be made in addition to the already planned construction of the rail pass in Landgraaf. Furthermore, between Heerlen and Herzogenrath tracks need to be doubled and electrified.
