Project milestones

January 2013

The benefit-cost analysis of the double-track upgrading Dülken-Kaldenkirchen, as a first outcome of the joint preliminary planning improving the cross-border rail connection Düsseldorf-Eindhoven, is completed. The study includes infrastructure requirements, infrastructure planning, cost estimation and a cost-benefit analysis.

With a benefit-cost ratio of 17,7 the cost-benefit analysis shows clearly an added value of the double-track upgrading.

The Metropolregion Rheinland (cooperation of Lord Mayors, District Administrators and Chambers of Industry and Commerce) and the Regional Council (regional planning authority) have given their supportive vote.

Now the results of the analysis serve as a basis for the application of the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan.

Dutch German delegation meets German Transport Minister Ramsauer to promote the upgrade of the connection Duesseldorf-Eindhoven. To emphasise the intention to realise the project the delegation brought along the information about the start of the joint preliminary planning. (Press Release German)

At the Round Table IC Connection Eindhoven-Düsseldorf on 1 July 2011 in Düsseldorf, we presented and discussed the results of our study 'Improvement of the Eindhoven-Düsseldorf Rail Corridor' with relevant Dutch and German stakeholders.

Project Overview

This part of RoCK will improve the connectivity of the rail connection Eindhoven-Venlo-Mönchengladbach-Düsseldorf by using existing infrastructure and removing technical barriers.

In the European network of knowledge regions, the 'Brainport' Eindhoven, Brabantstad and the Ruhr area are prominent members. To strengthen economic cooperation, fast and efficient rail connections are necassary. These connections are missing between Eindhoven and Düsseldorf, even though the basic rail infrastructure is present.

This calls for a creative solution that generates a maximum outcome with the available budget.

Planning

The aim of this investment is to develop and implement a cost-efficient solution to realise interoperability on this cross-border connection.

Necessary steps to be taken in this project are:

Research on the most efficient technical solutions (a.o. a cost-effective introduction of ERMTS, taking advantage of experience gained in the Maastricht-Hasselt light rail project)
Implementation of the best solution within the identified price range
Investments in equipment (installation/casing of technical systems in the field of safety aggregation)
